Change the IP address in the client area

If your server’s address no longer works for you, for example it cannot be reached from mainland China, you can switch the server to a new IPv4 address yourself. It is offline for about 1–2 minutes; there is no reinstall, and the data, SSH port and root password stay the same.

1. Before you change

  • Price: each IP change costs US$1, paid from your account credit (you can add credit in the client area, US$5 to US$1,000 per payment). Some servers still have a free change: before you confirm, the client area shows whether this change is free.
  • Limit: in the client area you can change the IP of one server up to 3 times within any 30 days; each server counts separately. After that the client area says the limit is reached: open a ticket if you need another change.
  • Money-back: after an IP change, the server is no longer covered by the 7-day money-back guarantee (Refund and Billing Policy 6.1).
  • Route: in Los Angeles, a new address currently has the same routes as your present one. Changing the IP fixes an address that cannot be reached; it does not make the route better or worse.
  • IP databases and websites: how IP databases label an address and how websites treat it is their own decision, so a new address may show the same result there.

2. Change the IP address

  1. Log in to the client area and open your server.
  2. Go to the IP & location section (the navigation bar at the top of the page jumps to it).
  3. Under Change IP address, read the line about this change: free, or the price and your available credit. You can add a reason; it is optional.
  4. Tick “I understand that the server is offline for about 1–2 minutes”, click Change IP address and confirm.
  5. Wait about 1–2 minutes. The page refreshes by itself and shows the new address when it is done. A server that was shut down stays shut down.

3. After the change

  • Connect to the new address with the same SSH port and root password. The server’s SSH host key stays the same.
  • Replace the old address wherever you use it: DNS records, VPN or proxy client profiles, firewall allow-lists.
  • The old address no longer belongs to your server.

4. If something is not right

  • The system still shows the old address (ip a) or has no network. The new address is handed to the system through cloud-init. If cloud-init’s network setting was switched off, or the system was altered (for example a custom kernel or a replaced image), the new address is not written in. Set it from the Web console (ask in a ticket for the netmask and gateway), or open a ticket and ask us to fix it: staff then change only the network configuration inside the server and keep a backup of the file.
  • The client area says no new IP is available right now. Open a ticket.
  • The new address cannot be reached from mainland China from the start. Open a ticket. Once staff have confirmed it, they replace it with another address at no charge, and the replacement does not count as an IP change.
  • You need a particular address. Ask in a ticket. We change to it if it is unused and reachable from mainland China; it counts as a normal IP change.
